With one in five Australians affected by mental illness in a 12-month period it’s an issue that impacts so many of us.
CatholicCare NT offers a range of services to support people and their families affected by mental illness.
Jayne Lloyd Director CatholicCare NT said it is recognised that women were more likely to use support services.
“We have several men counsellors and would encourage more men to call for support.
“Our programs are Territory wide and are designed to support everyone impacted including the person living with mental illness and their family.
“Our new Children and Parenting Support Program is a free service supporting children and young people, particularly those who are showing signs of worry. It’s offered in Darwin, Nauiyu, Tennant Creek, the Barkly region, Wadeye, and west Arnhem. And, includes counselling, in home support and community outreach.” she said.
Anyone can develop mental illness. It’s not a life sentence and with support most people will recover completely and go on to live full, happy lives.
Ms Lloyd said it is encouraging to see more people openly discussing mental illness.
“It is something that’s not that well understood and it’s positive to see the walls slowly coming down.” she said.
CatholicCare NT also offers a range of courses throughout the year designed to support people to cope. The next course is Partners in Depression which will be run in Darwin 2 November to 7 December 2015.
